Would, Should, Could - Advanced Uses

Estos modales tienen usos avanzados más allá de sus significados básicos, especialmente en contextos formales y literarios.

Would - Usos avanzados:

Hábitos pasados

When I was young, I would play outside every day

She would always help her neighbors

We would go to the beach on Sundays

(= used to, pero más formal)

Preferencia/Insistencia

The car won't start. It wouldn't start yesterday either

I would rather stay home

She would prefer to wait

(= prefer, insist)

Should - Usos avanzados:

Obligación moral/deber

You should respect your parents

We should protect the environment

Students should do their homework

(= it's the right thing to do)

Expectativas lógicas

The train should arrive soon

She should be home by now

That should be enough

(= it's logical to expect)

Could - Usos avanzados:

Posibilidad teórica

This could be the solution

It could rain tomorrow

She could be right

(= it's possible, but not certain)

Permiso educado

Could I borrow your pen?

Could you help me, please?

Could we meet tomorrow?

(= more polite than can/may)

Diferencias sutiles:

Would vs Could:

I would help you (willingness)

I could help you (ability)

Would you like some tea? (polite offer)

Could you pass the salt? (polite request)

Should vs Ought to:

You should study more (advice)

You ought to study more (moral duty)

Ambos significan lo mismo pero ought to es más formal
