Check In, Check Out, Check Up: Significado y Ejemplos
Este grupo es imprescindible para viajar, pero su utilidad va mucho más allá del hotel y el aeropuerto. Los tres han pasado al lenguaje cotidiano con sentidos que conviene distinguir bien.
Fíjate en que check in y check out funcionan también como sustantivos escritos en una sola palabra: the check-in desk, checkout is at eleven. En el supermercado, the checkout es directamente la caja.
CHECK IN
Significado: Registrarse (hotel, aeropuerto)

Check in with someone: ponerse en contacto brevemente para saber cómo va algo. Es muy habitual en el trabajo y no tiene nada que ver con hoteles.
CHECK OUT
Significado: Salir (hotel), revisar, pagar

Tres sentidos: dejar el hotel, mirar algo con interés (muy informal, casi una interjección) y verificar que una información es cierta. El tercero es habitual en periodismo y en investigaciones.
CHECK UP
Significado: Revisar, hacer un chequeo médico

Siempre con «on»: se dice check up on someone. Según el tono puede ser preocupación legítima o vigilancia molesta. El sustantivo a check-up es una revisión médica.
CHECK OVER
Significado: Revisar cuidadosamente

Separable y neutro: vale en cualquier registro, desde pedir un favor a un amigo hasta describir una inspección técnica. Un sinónimo algo más formal es go over.
CHECK OFF
Significado: Marcar, tachar de una lista

Británico y americano: en Estados Unidos se dice check off; en el Reino Unido es más habitual tick off, con el mismo significado. Cuidado: tick someone off también significa regañar.
