Give Up, Give In, Give Out: Significado y Ejemplos
Se dice give up smoking, no give up to smoke.
GIVE UP
Significado: Rendirse, abandonar, dejar de hacer algo
| Ejemplo | Traducción |
|---|---|
| Don't give up! Keep trying. | ¡No te rindas! Sigue intentando. |
| I gave up smoking last year. | Dejé de fumar el año pasado. |
| She gave up her job to travel. | Renunció a su trabajo para viajar. |
| She gave up smoking three years ago. | Dejó de fumar hace tres años. |
| Don't give up now, you're almost there. | No te rindas ahora, ya casi estás. |
Siempre con gerundio: give up eating meat, give up trying.
GIVE IN
Significado: Ceder, rendirse ante presión
| Ejemplo | Traducción |
|---|---|
| Don't give in to their demands. | No cedas ante sus demandas. |
| He finally gave in and agreed. | Finalmente cedió y estuvo de acuerdo. |
| After hours of arguing, her parents gave in. | Después de horas discutiendo, sus padres cedieron. |
| He refused to give in to the pressure. | Se negó a ceder ante la presión. |
GIVE OUT
Significados:
- Repartir, distribuir
- Averiarse, fallar (máquinas)
| Ejemplo | Traducción |
|---|---|
| They gave out free samples. | Repartieron muestras gratis. |
| My phone gave out yesterday. | Mi teléfono se averió ayer. |
| They were giving out leaflets outside the station. | Estaban repartiendo folletos fuera de la estación. |
| My legs gave out on the last kilometre.
GIVE AWAY
Significado: Regalar, revelar (secretos)
| Ejemplo | Traducción |
|---|---|
| I'll give away my old books. | Regalaré mis libros viejos. |
| Don't give away the surprise! | ¡No reveles la sorpresa! |
| We gave away most of the furniture when we moved. |
| His face gave him away. | Su cara lo delató. |
GIVE BACK
Significado: Devolver
| Ejemplo | Traducción |
|---|---|
| Please give back my pen. | Por favor, devuélveme mi bolígrafo. |
| I'll give it back tomorrow. | Lo devolveré mañana. |
| Give me back my keys. | Devuélveme las llaves. |
| He wanted to give back to the community that raised him. |
Give back to: sin objeto directo y con to, significa retribuir a un colectivo lo que se ha recibido. Aparece mucho en discursos y en entrevistas.
